Mother's Day 2021

Mother's Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. This year, we chose to connect with motherly figures in our community and share their unique stories. Our intention is to celebrate Motherhood in all of her forms. Read on to learn about the Women in your community and their individual slow & sustainable parenting journeys.

WHO/WHAT HAS INFLUENCED YOUR PARENTING STYLE?

I am a social worker so for me it’s all about making sure they are loved, feel safe and know we are here for them.

We have rules and boundaries and don’t get me wrong I yell and scream, but my main goal is to make sure they know they are loved and cherish. I guess this comes from working with so many children who have not felt that.

HOW DO YOU FIND TIME TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR YOURSELF & WHY DO YOU THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO TAKE OUT SOMETIME FOR YOURSELF?

Take care of myself?? What even is that.
I must admit in the early years of motherhood I made no time for me.. I just didn’t know how.
As my journey goes on I am finding ways to fit it in around children and booking time in advance so I can. Girls days, Facials, Walks
It can be just something so small just for you. We all need that time, otherwise we are not at our best and our children don’t get our best.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF SUSTAINABILITY IN YOUR MOTHERHOOD JOURNEY?

We are very much an environmental family (all vegetarians) minus my daughter Allegra who loves some bacon. We recycle and we compost now we don’t have chooks. We use environmentally friendly products and we re use or up cycle where we can. We teach the kids why and make sure they know how important it is. They Cherish every living thing as all animals have a purpose. We op shop and shop as ethical as possible (not always I will admit) but I have stopped buying from certain brands that rate too highly on the un-ethical list.

The kids know that we can always do better and are always learning and growing and I think that’s my role, make sure you are never happy with just what you are doing.. always know there is something else to learn.

WHAT ADVICE WILL YOU SHARE WITH YOUR LITTLE ONE?

Always be you, not everyone will like you or understand you and that's ok. Never change for someone else. You are amazing as you are.

ONE KEY THING YOU WOULD TEACH YOUR LITTLE ONE TO PROTECT THIS PLANET?

We can always do better, we just continuously change and grown as we learn.

WHAT DOES MOTHER'S DAY MEAN TO YOU?

It’s a day to celebrate the joy and privilege of being a mother. And also to celebrate the ones who made me a mother, my children.

WHO/WHAT HAS INFLUENCED YOUR PARENTING STYLE?

I’m very influenced by my own mother, she showed us nothing but support and love throughout our childhood, and that’s what I want for my children too.

HOW DO YOU FIND TIME TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR YOURSELF & WHY DO YOU THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO TAKE OUT SOMETIME FOR YOURSELF?

It’s hard to find the time to take care of myself actually because I really feel that as soon as you become a mother, your priorities shift. It is important to try and have some time to yourself though, I honestly think having a bit of ‘me-time’ here and there helps me to be more present with the kids when I’m with them.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF SUSTAINABILITY IN YOUR MOTHERHOOD JOURNEY?

It’s only since becoming a mum that I’ve started to think more about sustainability, as I want our children to have a wonderful future. Choosing to buy items from more sustainable brands is so important to me now, and I hope more brands start to follow more sustainable practices too.

WHAT ADVICE WILL YOU SHARE WITH YOUR LITTLE ONE?

Follow your dreams. Love each other. Never give up. And know you will always find comfort in your mother's’ arms.

ONE KEY THING YOU WOULD TEACH YOUR LITTLE ONE TO PROTECT THIS PLANET?

Teaching my kids about the importance of recycling and caring for our environment every day. After all, we do only have one.
